A faggot is a stick of firewood—something of no use but to be burned. That’s why in Britain it’s a slang word for a cigarette. And why it has been used historically to refer to gay men. Since the Catholic Church was the main authority authorizing the execution of gay men by burning them alive, one would think a scholarly Jesuit like the Pope would understand just how antithetical it is to the teachings of Jesus to label other human beings like this.
